Voluntary Work Visa – France

Overview

The Voluntary Work Visa is designed for individuals engaging in civic service, association-based volunteer work, or the European Voluntary Service (EVS) in France. Depending on the type and duration of voluntary service, different visa categories apply:

  • European Voluntary Service (EVS) → Issued a temporary long-stay visa (VLS-T) marked “Volunteer”.
  • Other volunteer programs (under 12 months) → Issued a temporary long-stay visa (VLS-T) marked “Temporary exemption from a residence permit”.
  • Other volunteer programs (over 12 months) → Issued a long-stay visa marked “Visitor”.

Processing Time

Applicants should apply at least one month before travel and no earlier than six months before the intended departure date.

Documents Required

Pre-requisites

  • Passport – Issued within the last 10 years, containing at least two blank pages, and valid for at least three months beyond the departure date.
  • ID Photograph – As per Photo Specifications.
  • UK Residency –
    • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.
  • Official Travel Document – If applicable, a Note Verbale is required.

Purpose of Travel/Stay

For Civic Service & Association-Based Volunteering

  • Accreditation Agreement – Issued by the Civic Service Agency confirming the association or foundation’s approval.
  • Written Undertaking – Signed declaration by the applicant confirming their intent to leave France upon completion of the volunteer program.
  • Volunteer Contract – A formal agreement between the volunteer and the accredited association or foundation detailing the terms and duration of the service.

For European Voluntary Service (EVS)

  • Volunteer Contract – Signed by the volunteer, the sending organization, and the host bodyaccredited by the European Union.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Hotel booking, rental agreement, or proof of residence in France.
  • Attestation d’Accueil issued by the local town hall in France, if applicable.

Proof of Travel

  • Confirmed return ticket (plane, ferry, bus, etc.).

Proof of Finance

  • Evidence of financial means to support the stay in France.

Travel Health Insurance

  • Minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical expenses, including emergencies.

Arrival in France – Important Steps

Upon arrival, volunteers must adhere to national immigration requirements:

  • Border Control Requirements– Present a valid passport, visa, proof of accommodation, and travel health insurance.
  • Residence Permit Formalities– If required, apply for a residence permit validation in France.
  • Compliance with Volunteer Program Regulations– Ensure continued participation in the assigned voluntary work program.

Photo Specifications

  • Recent and True to Appearance: The photograph must reflect your current appearance and must not be older than six months.
  • Size Requirements: The photo should be between 35 mm and 40 mm wide.
  • Face Proportion: The face should occupy 32 mm to 36 mm(approximately 70-80% of the photo) from chin to forehead, excluding hair.
  • Background: A plain, light-coloured backgroundis required, with no shadows or patterns.
  • Expression: A neutral expression, with both eyes open and clearly visible. No excessive smiling or frowning.
  • Head Position: The face must be cantered and looking directly at the camera.
  • Glasses & Accessories: No tinted glasses, reflections, or glare; frames must not cover the eyes. Head coverings are only permitted for religious or medical reasons and must not obscure facial features.
